Domenique Dumont – Miniatures de auto rhythm

This group are fairly new but are already pioneering a genre of their own. The music is a fusion of by latin dance rhythms, chill electronica and lo-fi.

Miniatures de auto rhythm is their first studio album. There are sporadic vocals, but who knows what the lyrics are?! I like Quasi quasi in particular. The way the beat becomes offset is just cool.

To Live & Die in Space & Time

A four track EP by Lynn Avery and Cole Pumice which combines spacious synths with electronically-modified saxophones. I can see the set in two ways; either a biological lifecycle or, more simply, dawn, day, dusk and night.

My favourite track is the last. It’s B minor drone held for almost thirteen minutes alongside piano and use two saxophone voices (using vocoder-style harmoniser) with almost ludicrous use of pitch bend seems to make time simply disappear.

As a side note, the drone reminds me of the soundtrack to Portal, a computer game published by Valve.

Avery’s style seems to be consistent yet unclassifiable. Have a listen to this – very similar to The Sunken Cabin except with an ostinato in place of the drone.
